Luke Jacob on Nikolai Vavilov, Soviet agronomist

Note: In order to assure that our events are safe and welcoming to all participants, we do not usually include the ZOOM link for events in our newsletter. If you are not on Jimmy's email list, please register for ZOOM Events on the event page (Click the More Information link for the event) and Jimmy will send you the ZOOM link and add you to his list for future events.
I hope you can join us next Tuesday, March 8, at 7:00 PM ET for another fascinating topic. We will be discussing Luke Jacob's long poem "Vavilov at Saratov." Here is a description from the introduction to the poem:
From late 1941 until January 1943, Nikolay Ivanovich Vavilov was held in one of Stalin’s gulag prisons, in Saratov, Russia. Vavilov was the greatest agricultural botanist in the Soviet Union, and perhaps in the world. He had developed theories about crop diversity that still dominate the field today, and had curated the ‘seed vault’ that became the model for all such subsequent collections dedicated to preserving the history and the future of the human race’s agricultural endeavors. Vavilov had fallen more and more out of favor with Stalin over the years, his place usurped by Trofim Lysenko, a rival botanist whose theories about plant heredity were attractive to the science-skeptical Party leadership, though Vavilov knew them to be fraudulent.

This Sunday's meeting of the Down Cellar Poets at 1:00 PM ET will be a discussion of the First Line Project. Everyone is invited to attend. The Zoom link is below. This is the final week to submit a first line to me if you have not already done so. I will send a handout to all participants.
