“Come Closer and Listen” A Community Reading Of Charles Simic Poems at the Hopkinton Town Library in Contoocook, NH.
Charles Simic (1938-2023) was a NH award-winning poet, essayist, and translator born in Yugoslavia. He has received many literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize, the MacArthur Fellowship, and the Wallace Stevens Award. Simic was a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, and in 2007 he was chosen as Poet Laureate of the United States. He was professor emeritus at the University of New Hampshire, where he taught since 1973.

A limited number of reading spaces are available. We will sign up readers on a first-come, first-served basis. Each reader will read one poem. High school students are encouraged to participate! Send your complete contact information and the book where you found the poem/s. Copies of some of Simic’s books will be available for purchase. Introductory remarks by Jennnifer Militello, Director of the New England College, MFA Writing Program.
