Tuesday, September 27, at 7:00 PM EST. Elaine Sexton– Can You Judge a Book by Its Cover?
All books have a cover story. What’s yours? Elaine will read from and talk about her new collection of poems, Drive, by way of her latest book’s “cover story,” and open a discussion to the role the cover of a book plays in the “success” of a book of poems, and the challenges writers face getting the covers their books deserve. The success of a book of poetry may be gauged not only by copies sold, but how well the cover represents what readers will find inside, how readers, booksellers, teachers, and reviewers respond to it, and, importantly, how a writer feels about holding it in their hands. Elaine will offer examples of book covers that thrill, intrigue, engage, and some (in her estimation) fail. She maintains many authors miss the opportunity to make a poem of the cover of their books. She will read poems from Drive, and invite responses and questions to her poetry, and share her thoughts on book design.
Elaine is a writer, critic, teacher and maker. Her poetry has been published widely, and she is a micro-publisher and founder of several presses. She served as the visual arts editor for Tupelo Quarterly (2016-2022), and as a critic reviewing for Art in America and ARTnews. Drive is her fourth full-length collection of poetry, out with Grid Books (2022).
