Please join Carla Schwartz on Tuesday, August 2, at 7:00 PM EST for a reading and discussion of her poetry inspired by living on an island in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake. Here is a description of the event in Carla’s words:

“Living on Lake Winnipsaukee’s largest unabridged island (Bear Island) in Meredith, NH has its shortcomings and rich benefits. There are no cars on the island of some 200 homes. The island wildlife include deer, red squirrels, and minks as well as several varieties of ducks, loons, herons, and other waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds. To reach my car, I have to travel 2 1/2 miles by Kayak. We have two kayaks, two paddle-boards, an off-the-grid solar-powered houseboat, and a solar-powered small 14 foot Alumacraft. We have no fossil fuels on our premises except for the Bic lighter we sometimes use to whip a nylon rope. Whipping ropes, swimming, paddling, docking, and tying up is part of our daily messing around in boat life. The water and the wind play a big part in our Bear Island lives. We live on the cove at the isthmus of Bear Island and from our house at the time of the equinoxes, the sun rises over the lake in front of our front windows and sets over the lake’s horizon just behind our house. I’ve named our home “East meets West” for that reason. I’ve also named the solar houseboat “Wake with the Sun,” and our other solar boat “Solectric.” I’ll be sharing some poems from two of my books, Signs of Marriage and Intimacy with the Wind (both from Finishing Line Press), as well as some as yet unpublished poems.”
