Among the most enduring themes in poetry is “carpe diem,” a Latin phrase, coined by the ancient Roman poet Horace in one of his odes, meaning “seize the day” or, more metaphorically, as if the day were ripened fruit, “pluck the day.” The implication was that we never know what’s next, so we should live the day we’re in—and live it up! Among the poets who picked up on Horace’s notion were 16th- and 17th-century English poets, who channeled Horace’s “carpe diem” into the greatest of all pick-up lines in poems whose message was essentially, to quote Janis Joplin: “Get it while you can.” In this workshop, we’ll take a look at the tradition and at some of the poems that have carried it forward and turned it upside down.
