PSNH Presents: Cynthia Hogue – Poetry and the Alchemy of Place
Date(s) - September 20, 2022
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Please join Cynthia Hogue on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 PM EST. Cynthia’s presentation and discussion of Poetry and the Alchemy of Place will begin with a personal encounter that took her a long time to process in a poem. Contact email@example.com for participation details.
By way of approach, Cynthia will ask a question Cole Swensen raises about Sally Mann’s photos of Civil War battlefields. Swensen notes that they bring out an “indelible darkness” of place, and asks if “earth remembers grief.” Cynthia happened upon such darkness in one of her touchstone places, and came to ask another question about how poets approach such material.
After introducing the evening’s focus and sharing her own experience, the group will explore some poems by other poets, focusing on how or whether they alchemized—transformed—their material. You will read poems by Marianne Moore, Linda Hogan, Jake Adam York, and Carolyn Forche, among others, in addition to her own (if time permits).
