We live in a contradictory world. On the one hand the world is full of violence and enmity between people, and it’s getting hotter, too; on the other, there’s also abundant kindness, and the flowers continue to gloriously, heedlessly bloom. As the poet Maggie Smith has said, “We live in a broken place, and yet it’s a beautiful place. Both are true….And so some of it is just being able to hold those two things at the same time.” How can poetry help us do that? How can poetry be a place where both the beautiful and broken find a home?

David’s bio: David Ebenbach is the author of three books of poetry, including his forthcoming collection What’s Left to Us by Evening (Orison Books), along with six books of fiction and non-fiction. His books have won such awards as the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and the Juniper Prize, among others. David lives with his family in Washington, DC, where he revels in the flowers and worries about the future.
