Flannery O’Connor once said, “Anyone who survived childhood has enough material to write for the rest of his life.” But how does a poet tap into that childhood “material” and transform it into poems? What strategies can help poets mine their memories and connect with their childhood selves? And how might inhabiting a child’s perspective through a persona, an invented character, allow poets to approach the material in fresh, surprising ways? In this reading and conversation, Jeffrey Bean will explore these questions and discuss his process in writing his new chapbook, Ella’s Plan, a series of poems focused on the point of view of a fictional child named Ella.
