Join PSNH on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 for a presentation by Tammy Truax for a discussion about Verse Novels.
In this workshop we will explore the literary genre of verse novels, growing quite popular in recent years especially with young people. Participants will learn in detail how they differ from other books of poetry and what a rich canon it is. We will look closely at a few poems, but I’d like to recommend two books for advance study. Reading one or both is entirely optional but would enrich our conversation. For fun, I’ve chosen two works that are about famous poets. They are:
Your Own Sylvia: A Verse Novel of Sylvia Plath by Stephanie Hemphill, and The Age of Phillis by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers.
Tammi is a NH public school teacher/librarian and a writer. All of her work centers around equity, truth telling and the powerful beauty of the printed word. She has work in 16 anthologies, and a verse novel, For to See the Elephant, was published in 2019 (Piscataqua Press). A children’s picture book and a two volume historical novel are forthcoming. While she served as the Portsmouth Poet Laureate her project received worldwide coverage including in the New York Times. For three years she was also the Maine Beat Poet Laureate. She lives and writes in a cottage in the woods of Eliot, Maine. Find her on Facebook or Instagram, and for now…. Twitter.
