Writing Your Art: Poems about Poetry
Thursday, November 17, 1-3 pm EST (6-8pm UK).
If there’s one topic that poets ought to know about, it’s poetry itself!
So it’s not surprising that for thousands of years, poets have written poems that are all about the art and purpose of poetry. Called ars poetica, these poems allow poets to express the intentions, loves, fears, and struggles of their art. And seeing as poetry is also something that poets feel passionate about, it’s not surprising either that many of these are moving and memorable poems in their own right—which explains why they still get written, read, and published!
In this month’s Spark we will look at several approaches to writing your own poems about the art of poetry. We’ll explore how poets tackle the subject directly and obliquely, imaginatively and literally, so you can find your own ways into this surprisingly varied and fulfilling topic.
Included are:
-
A short pack of poems to inspire you, with brief discussion
-
3 specific writing prompts
-
Writing time
-
Brief feedback.
