PSNH Member Spotlight – March 2023

Ala Khaki’s new poetry collection, Remembrances, A Poetic Memoir of Life in A Political Prison in Iran, published by Bee Monk Press, is now available at Amazon. Dedicated to all current and former political prisoners, Remembrances, is a poetic window into life inside Iran’s notorious Evin prison during the final years of the Shah’s regime. It is one voice to ensure the world does not forget them and theirs.
Brian Evan-Jones invites poets to visit The Root Cafe in Temple, NH. Open Mic is the last Thursday of every month at 6:30pm ET. Upcoming Open Mics are on March 30, April 27, May 25. Read your own poems, read poems by your favorite poets, or come to support the poets by listening to the poems. You can get delicious coffee, teas, and food at the café, warm up at the fire, listen to the live music, hang out with other poets and poetry lovers, and enjoy the night.
Carlene Gadapee shared some great news: after a long pandemic hiatus, The Frost Place will re-open this summer and is accepting applications for the 2023 Frost Place 2023 Conference on Poetry and Teaching | Writing Intensive which will be held on-site in Franconia. The conference is not only for classroom teachers, but is also geared toward nontraditional teaching/mentoring roles, such as community group leaders, college educators, etc. For more information and to register, please go to frostplace.org.
Catherine O’Brian, Jennifer Militello, and L.R. Berger are working with the Hopkinton Town Library to host “Come Closer and Listen : A Community Reading of Charles Simic Poems ” on Sunday, May 7. Come to listen, come to read — sign up to read one of your favorite Simic poems.
Chris Dornin enjoys connecting with fellow poets at Gibson’s Bookstore and is grateful for the encouragement he receives from the Penacook Writers Group. Several of Chris’s poems were accepted for publication and will be forthcoming: “A husky leads us to our graves” in Oberon; “Same window by a bottle of wine” and “We stare at trees now” in Mudfish; “My mother died in her sleep” in Blue Unicorn.
C.I. Marshall will celebrate National Poetry Month on Cape Cod where she will be present several readings and workshops: an in-person workshop on Beginnings and Endings in Poems on April 5 at the West Tilsbury Free Library; an in person on April 6 at the Brewster Ladies’ Library as part of an East Coast Book Tour; “Poetry Prescriptions” at an in-person event on April 8 at the Chilmark Library, co-hosted by the Vineyard Haven Library.
Jon Escher’s poem “The View” was published in the latest issue of Frost Meadow Review, Volume 10.
Josh Nicolaisen recently published his poems, “While Running Errands” in Issue No. 11 of So It Goes, The Literary Journal of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, and “Dosage” in the Winter/Spring 2023 Issue of Nixes Mate Review.
Joyce Ray’s children’s book Food for All Our Tomorrows, Poems on Seed, Soil, and Sustainability, an illustrated, bilingual collection of haibun poetry, will be published by the Asian Rural Institute in Japan in early summer 2023. Joyce’s poem “The Language of Trees” was published in the “Deep Water” section of the Portland Press Herald on February 26.
Rebecca Kaiser Gibson author of a debut novel, The Promise of a Normal Life, will be featured in Literary Modiin’s March Author Event on Sunday, March 12. ~~ Rebecca is also the founder of The Loom Poetry Series. On April 30 world renowned poets Ilya Kaminsky and Katie Farris will read in the intimate setting of the beautifully restored Chesham and Harrisville Community Church.
Rodger Martin — poet, teacher, editor, journalist, director of Monadnock Pastoral Poets — will read at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery on the campus of Keene State College on March 29. He will be joined by Alexandra Itzi, writing instructor for the Jacobson Center and an instructor of creative writing at Keene State College.
